Ron and Sharon Weaver started coming to Black Meadow Landing full time in 2011, and he soon became known as the guy to call if you needed help, our own MacGyver. (MacGyver is a fictional character known for his genius-level intellect and inventive problem-solving skills, often using everyday items.) Nearly everyone in the park has a story about some mechanical, electric, or other problem that Ron has solved for them.
In 2013, Ron approached George about erecting fences to protect the RV sites between the restroom and hole #1. At that time, no one dared park there for fear of errant golf balls breaking a window. George agreed and offered scrap metal he had acquired at salvage sales.
Ron designed a 240-foot long section of fencing 20 feet high. Someone suggested using lightweight inferior materials, but Ron insisted on the heavy poles from the junkyard. “Let’s do it so we can hang our names on it, not hide our faces,” he said.
He spent two days sifting through the scraps and the tarantulas to find the poles and brackets for the gates. Using money raised through various fundraisers, they purchased chicken wire, hog rings (screws), mechanics wire, etc. He and Larry Meagher and some other volunteers spent two days putting together 10-foot sections.
At noon on a Thursday, he said he needed volunteers to erect it, and they got close to a hundred people the next day. With three people per pole they had hoisted it into position within 10 minutes, and those campsites soon began to fill up. A couple of years later, they built a 200-foot long fence, also 20 feet high, on hole 3.
Ron also built the shelter by the store. In March 2015, George asked Ron if he wanted a project and showed him the blueprint that snowbird Jim Stewart had drawn. Ron spent a month cleaning the heavy steel poles that George wanted to use and then two days erecting and welding it using George’s manlifts and loader. Ron says, “I really enjoyed it, and George gave me a cheeseburger at the diner – with fries!”
